Constructionline
A UK pre-qualification scheme for construction, FM, and built-environment suppliers, with Gold and Platinum membership tiers.
Definition
Constructionline is a UK pre-qualification scheme widely used by contracting authorities for construction, facilities management, and related built-environment procurements. Membership is tiered (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum) with each tier representing a deeper level of assurance on company information, financial standing, health and safety, equality, environmental management, and quality. Many public sector buyers require suppliers to hold a valid Constructionline Gold or Platinum membership as a condition of being invited to tender for construction-related contracts.
How it works in practice
Constructionline's value to buyers is that it consolidates dozens of standard PQQ checks into a single pre-vetted profile that can be re-used across tenders. Rather than each authority asking each supplier the same financial and policy questions, the buyer accesses the supplier's Constructionline profile and any sector-specific accreditation (such as Acclaim or SSIP for health and safety). This is a substantial time saving on both sides. Gold membership covers company information, financial standing, equality and diversity, environmental management, and quality management. Platinum adds a deeper assessment including site management, training, and supply chain due diligence. The cost of membership scales with company turnover and tier. For SMEs the membership fee can feel disproportionate at first but typically pays back after two or three tenders where Constructionline standing is required. Maintenance is the trap: a lapsed Constructionline membership during a live tender is grounds for disqualification, so the renewal date sits in every bid manager's calendar. Constructionline membership does not replace the Selection Questionnaire but is widely accepted as evidence of the SQ topics it covers.
Common questions
Do I need Constructionline to bid for construction work?
For UK central government and most local authority construction tenders, Gold or Platinum membership is either a hard requirement or a strong de facto requirement. For low-value works (under £25,000 typically) or for non-construction services within a built-environment contract, Constructionline may not be required; check the specific tender.
What is the difference between Constructionline Gold and Platinum?
Gold covers the standard PQQ topics including financial standing, equality, environmental management, and quality management. Platinum adds a deeper site management assessment, training and competence checks, and supply chain due diligence. Some larger framework tenders specify Platinum; most general construction work asks for Gold.
How does Constructionline relate to SSIP?
SSIP (Safety Schemes in Procurement) is a separate health-and-safety pre-qualification framework with members such as Acclaim, CHAS, and SafeContractor. Many buyers require both Constructionline (general PQQ topics) and SSIP membership (health and safety). Constructionline membership at Gold or above usually incorporates SSIP-equivalent checks but check the specific tender.
